Charles Rennie Mackintosh

Charles Rennie Mackintosh Portrait

C.R. Mackintosh, the Scottish architect and designer was one of the most important Art Nouveau designers. In his hometown, one finds today many of his remarkable architectural designs. But C.R. loved especially to design furniture.

In his perpendicular style, he regarded the space around and within his furniture to be as essential to the design as the upholstery or wood. Mackintosh showed his furniture for the first time at the Vienna Secession Exhibition in 1900.

Three years later he was commissioned to design and decorate the "Hill House Chair". In his furniture design for the Hill House Mackintosh expressed his understanding, that design was more important than craftsmanship. Today Mackintosh's work is highly appraised, because he was one of the first designers to break away from the Arts and Crafts movement and use more streamlined detailing and lighter proportions.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) was and remains the most distinguished figure of what was known as the Glasgow School. An architect, decorator, graphic artist, painter and furniture designer, Mackintosh was known for combining the prosaic with the sumptuous, the severe with the romantic. This collection of essays examines his work in relation to the character of Glasgow and other artistic developments of the era. It also considers his contributions, and those of his wife and associates, to the cultural vibrancy of their city.

This volume looks at Mackintosh's work from his early days as an apprentice in Glasgow through to the late 1920s spent in Provence. By looking at his work in all media; silverwork, metalwork, graphics, textiles, furniture and architecture, this work presents a multi-faceted approach. Among the many projects discussed are the Glasgow Herald Building Martyr's Public School, Queen Margaret's Medical College, Glasgow School of Art, Willow Tea Rooms, Windyhill, Mosside and Kilmacolm. The text also looks at Mackintosh's work as a painter (1914-15) and his return to architecture. His later designs in all media are also featured, with an examination of Studio House, Chelsea and the proposed Arts League and Derngate in Northampton. Finally, the author looks at Mackintosh's time spent in Provence, where he produced some of his most important watercolours, and examines his influence both locally and around the world.
